Mexico Dissident Teachers Call on Supreme Court to Grant Protection Against Education Reform

La Jornada: Laura Poy Solano

Teachers of the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE) held a rally outside the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJ) to demand that it accept the petitions for amparo [protection] against the education reform, which were dismissed by a federal appeals court.

As part of their 'day of struggle', the teachers said that if they don't receive a favorable response to their demand for repeal of the educational reform, they will undertake various actions, including a boycott and protest of the [state and local] elections scheduled for July 7, and re-establish their national encampment [in Mexico City] on July 8.

At least 300 dissident teachers gathered outside the main entrance of the Supreme Court to demand that a committee of teachers be received to deliver their petition regarding the petitions for amparo submitted by at least 200,000 teachers from across the country to the appeals court beginning on April 3.

Leonel Reyes, a member of the leadership of section 18 of Michoacan, said:
"our main request is to be heard, because shortly we will present the appeals to the circuit courts."
After spending just over three hours outside the headquarters of the Supreme Court, he said that the teachers' demand is that the Supreme Court
"take on our cases and issue a final judgment in our favor, as it is evident that [the education reform] prejudices the labor rights of teachers."
In this regard, Daniel Hernandez, a member of the political leadership of Section 22 of Oaxaca, said the demonstrations and protests will not be suspended.
"We expect that once the 2012-2013 school year ends, we will strengthen the national encampment, but also the days of struggle," including the convening of a national consultation for the rescue of the nation.
He reminded that the sixth forum on education reform will be held today in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. The forums analyze the proposals made by the teachers. He added that on June 21, the seventh forum is scheduled in the nation's capital and will be attended by teachers' Sections [state units] from the Federal District and the states of Tlaxcala, Morelos, Puebla and Mexico. Spanish original
