Oaxaca • After keeping both lanes of the Oaxaca-Mexico Highway closed for an hour and a half..., teachers of Section 22 [a dissident section of the National Union of Education Workers] opted to only maintain control of toll booths to avoid being dislodged. Teachers cleared the roads that they had closed in both directions using various heavy vehicles like cargo trailers and tour buses.
The temporary seizure generated the formation of a long column of vehicles, mostly annoying tourists, who berated the actions of the teachers.
After holding a rally, the teachers chose to "tactically" retreat, clearing the blockade and only keeping control of the toll booths, where drivers were allowed to pass freely without having to pay a toll.
However, some structures were defaced by the protesters with graffiti, who kept yelling "Guerrero, bear up, Oaxaca rises" [the Spanish rhymes].
The union leader, Rubén Núñez Ginés, said the teachers would continue the blockade and seizure of the federal highway, until the government of Guerrero and the federal government offer conditions of free demonstration to their peers.
"We decided to take this highway as a reaction to the repression of our colleagues in Guerrero, who were the subject of an eviction after seizing the the Highway of the Sun."Spanish original
