Mexico Dissident Teachers File 600,000 Requests for Injunction Against Education Reform

La Jornada: Alfredo Mendez

The Federal Judiciary has received at least 600,000 requests for amparo [protection, i.e. injunction] from teachers, students, parents, normal school [teachers college] students, academics, researchers and other plaintiffs that oppose the education reform of Enrique Peña Nieto, revealed sources from the Federal Judiciary Council (CJF).

It will have final figures in the coming days, once it completes the final count of the collective and individual demands filed during the thirty (30) days that the teachers had to seek relief.

The sources say that the preliminary count refers to teachers from across the country; 820 joint applications were filed, bringing together teachers from Oaxaca, Michoacan, Tlaxcala, Jalisco, Sinaloa and Baja California, among others.

In their applications for protection, the plaintiffs asked the Federal Judiciary to determine whether the educational reform violates their rights.

So far, all the injunctions sought against the education reform have obtained a provisional injunction that protects teachers so that, in case they do not pass the evaluation exam now required by law, they will not be affected in salary or job security while the basic issue is resolved as to whether or not the amendments to the Education Law affect their labor rights.

According to the procedure established by the CJF, once the demands for protection are filed, they are referred to the federal district in Cholula, Puebla, which will be responsible for responding to the demands of the teachers. Spanish original
