Chilpancingo, Guerrero • Activists of the State Coordinating Committee of Education Workers of Guerrero [CETEG] attacked with stones, shovels and machetes the building housing Section 14 of the National Union of Education Workers [SNTE]. They did so after joining a demonstration by students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Normal School [teachers college].
The teachers college students began a demonstration at 11:00 AM on Thursday, walking in two lanes on the boulevard Vicente Guerrero, but not entering the Highway of the Sun, until they reached the Attorney General's office....
MV Note: The Highway of the Sun, the main highway between Mexico City and the resort of Acapulco, has been the scene of many recent demonstrations by dissident teachers. It is also where two normal school students were killed by police in Dec. 2011. Two police accused of the crime were released this week for lack of evidence.
Before the contingent arrived, the Attorney General, Martha Elva Garzón Bernal, abandoned the premises, accompanied by her security detail, while the main entrance was guarded by a group of state troopers in riot gear.
The normal school contingent was protesting the release of Ismael Matadama Salinas and Rey David Cortes Flores, members of the state police who were jailed for allegedly killing the two young men on December 12, 2011.
Teachers belonging to the CETEG placed themselves at the rear of the contingent of students. Most of the teachers were carrying sticks, metal tubes, rods, slingshots, and one had a machete. They took advantage of the student demonstration to attack the SNTE Section 14 building, which is just to the side of the Hall of Justice.
The teachers' actions provoked protests from the normal school students, who positioned themselves on the curb of the property to try to contain the aggression.
"This activity is only to remember our fallen comrades and denounce the impunity in the case. Please, don't divert us!" the students shouted when teachers began throwing stones. With the first stones, a large window was broken, sparking euphoria among the teachers, which angered the normal school students further, so they loudly demanded:
"Be respectful of our activity, keep marching!"Their pleas were not listened to. Large stones were thrown against the glass and, at the sound of the glass hitting the floor, the euphoria of the teachers grew.
The distress of the leaders of the Ayotzinapa students was so clear that even some members of the CETEG joined in the call to order, but they were ignored.
The worst occurred when the normal school students advanced to the prison facilities, the entrance of which is on the right side of the Hall of Justice, and teachers prevented the passage of the media. The students wanted to have their protest covered in detail by the media, but the blockade by the
teachers ... prevented proper coverage. Spanish original
