In 2012, Mexico Voices began publishing translations of key articles and opínion columns from the Mexican press. Although there is good coverage of Mexico by English-language newspapers, their authors inevitably write from their outsider, Anglo point of view. We believed that it was important for English readers to hear directly the voices of leading Mexican political analysts and activists to learn their insiders' point of view on Mexico's many challenges to become a functioning, safe democracy.
The issues of most interest to U.S. politicians and the public are addressing migration to the U.S., what to do about the U.S.-promoted war against the drug gangs, with its related traffic in military-grade arms, trade between the two countries and whether to invest in businesses in Mexico.
However, for Mexicans, the list of domestic issues is long and complex and how well the Mexican government addresses them critically affects the stability of the country and, thus, significantly, if indirectly, affects the U.S. as well as other countries in the Americas and the world. Mexico is the tenth-most populous nation in the world, about to pass Russia, and the sixteenth biggest economy.
For five years, thanks to a team of dedicated, excellent translators, we published three to five translations per day five days per week. All told, we published over seven thousand translations. We averaged well over one thousand readers per day and over two million in five years. We received favorable reviews from both Mexican and U.S. experts on Mexico. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish.
However, since mid-2017, due to a confluence of some non-fatal, but chronic and debilitating infirmities developed by this aging editor (we recently completed our eightieth year), we became unable to continue publishing Mexico Voices. We did publish a few occasional translations of articles about the beginning of the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and some of his early actions, but we were not able to sustain the effort.
Now, thanks to the alchemy of modern medicine, our infirmities are minimized and we feel ready and eager to attempt the relaunching of Mexico Voices. We will not be translating at the volume we did in the past, but hope, with the help of some of our volunteer translators, to be able to publish one to three translations each week. We are most delighted to be back. ¡Ojalá que sí! The Force be willing that it may be so!
