Mexico Prison Violence: Topo Chico Prison Brawl Bloodiest in Recent Years

The confrontation in Topo Chico Prison [Monterrey, Nuevo León] has been the bloodiest that has occurred in Meixco's prisons in recent years: 49 dead, five of them burned; and four seriously injured.

The previous highest number of deaths in brawls, riots or escapes in prisons occurred on February 19, 2012, at Apodaca Prison, also in Nuevo León, when 44 prisoners belonging to the Gulf Cartel were killed by gunmen from the rival Los Zetas cartel.
  • January 4, 2012: 31 convicts were killed and 13 wounded in a skirmish between gangs of inmates at the prison in Altamira, Tamaulipas.
  • June 14, 2010: 29 prisoners died in a clash in the prison at Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
  • December 18, 2013: Escape attempt and prison riot in Gómez Palacio Prison, Durango, left 24 dead15 prisoners [undergoing legal proceedings] and 9 convicts [serving sentences].
  • January 20, 2011: 23 prisoners died in a fight in the prison at the city of Durango.
  • March 4, 2009: Inmates belonging to the Los Aztecas gang (with the Juárez cartel) killed 22 convicts from the band Artistas Asesinos (with Sinaloa cartel).
  • October 20, 2011: Dispute between rival groups of inmates in the prison at Reynosa, Tamaulipas, claimed the lives of 21 people.
  • October 15, 2011: Fight between inmates in the prison in the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, left 20 dead and 12 wounded.
