Pact for Mexico Governing Council to Discuss Electoral, Political Reform

Milenio: Fernando Damián

Mexico City • This Friday the Governing Council of the Pact for Mexico will hold workshops to analyze the various proposals on electoral and political reform and integrate them into a single project for discussion during a possible special session of the Congress.

This was confirmed by PRD legislator Alfa Eliana González, who specified that among the topics for discussion will be creation of a National Institute of Elections, a Law of Political Parties, audit of campaign spending and political reform of the Federal District [Mexico City].
"We hope that in a couple of weeks we might have a proposal to present at a special session that could take place in July or it could be in August at the latest," she said.
Interviewed in the Legislative Palace at San Lázaro, the PRD federal deputy denied that the comprehensive political reform and that of the Federal District can be used as a "bargaining chip" to support energy and tax reforms.
"We have been very clear regarding the energy reform by saying where we are not going to yield, which is on amending Article 27 regarding privatization of Pemex. We are certainly not taking a step backward. That is not a bargaining chip, because it is simply not a subject of negotiation for us," she clarified.
González indicated that the six working groups will not only involve representatives of the Pact for Mexico, but that deputies and senators involved in the issues of comprehensive political reform will also actively participate.

She confirmed that among the participants will be the coordinator of the PRD bloc in the Senate, Miguel Barbosa, who together with the PAN coordinator, Ernesto Cordero, presented their own initiative. Spanish original
