At a public event a few yards from Monterrey Palace, Margarita Arellanes Cervantes, in her capacity as Mayor, handed over the city to “Jesus Christ” and declared him the “highest authority in the municipality”.

On Saturday, the Mayor attended an event organised by the Alliance of Pastors, called 'Monterrey Prays', which took place at around 18:00 in Plaza Zaragoza.

Arellanes Cervantes criticised those who are shocked when people talk about God in public, but remain silent and tolerate hatred and evil.
“In the last few months, and I say this with humility, we have been witness to increasingly obvious change for the better in our city, and this has happened because we have opened our doors to God. While we acknowledge that human participation is key, it is clear that only the light of faith in God can drive away the darkness.
“This is why we are gathered here today, and I, Margarita Alicia Arellanes Cervantes, hand over the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, to our lord Jesus Christ, so that his kingdom of peace and benediction may be built. I open the doors of this municipality to God as the highest authority. I recognise that without his presence and help we cannot truly succeed”, said the Mayor.
An assistant recorded her speech on video and it was then circulated on the social network YouTube. In it, she makes reference to the saying that, if the Lord does not build the house, the work of the builders is useless, and welcomes Jesus Christ to make Monterrey his home.
“If the Lord does not watch over the city, the work of its guardians is useless, which is why, with profound respect and reverence, I humbly ask God, with the community as my witness, to come into this city and make of it his home and to live in the hearts of each of its inhabitants. Lord Jesus Christ, welcome to Monterrey, the house that you have built for us, this is your house, Lord Jesus, Lord of Monterrey, thank you,” she said.
Arellanes Cervantes said the city was born in God’s name, which is why it should now be preserved, defended and loved.

At the end, two young people symbolically received a commemorative plaque of the “handing over of the city to Jesus Christ.”

The video, which lasts seven minutes 18 seconds, has provoked comment across social networks, with regard to the secular nature of the State and its institutions, covered in Article 130 of the Constitution. Yesterday, the issue even became a trending topic on Twitter. Spanish Original
