In Mexico there is social mobility among the middle strata, but not at the extremes of the social distribution. Lack of social mobility is reflected in the fact that 48 of every hundred Mexicans in the lowest quintile of the population remain there, and 52 people out of every hundred in the highest quintile do not move from that stratum.
Social mobility is an indicator that analyzes the choices that members of a society have for changing their socioeconomic status and measures equal opportunities in society, says the Report of Social Mobility in Mexico 2013: "Imagine Your Future", from the Espinosa Yglesias Center for Studies.
The report highlights its central message:
"Definitely, it is possible to imagine a future where people, regardless of their personal (socioeconomic status of father and mother, gender, cult or religion, sexual preference) and physical (height, weight , skin color) characteristics would receive the same opportunities and are able to compete on equal terms for a job."This analysis used data from the EMOVI-2011, designed to measure intergenerational social mobility in Mexico.
