Mexico Federal Deputy, Stepson of Vicente Fox, Backs Legalization of Marijuana

Proceso: Verónica Espinosa

Celaya, Guanajuato - Fernando Bribiesca Sahagun, stepson of former president Vicente Fox [2000-2006] and federal deputy for the New Alliance party (PANAL), said he was in favor of the legalization of marijuana and other soft drugs "if the goal is to end the violence in this country".

In addition, he announced an upcoming forum for analysis by experts regarding the initiative of a group of federal lawmakers, including the PRD deputy Fernando Belaunzarán [leader of the initiative] and René Fujiwara, also of PANAL and a grandson of Elba Esther Gordillo [former head of the teachers union, currently being held in prison on embezzlement charges].

Fernando Bribiesca ... was interviewed about the position promoted by Vicente Fox regarding the legalization of marijuana, and for Mexico to become a producer and exporter of the drug.

According to the legislator, Fox's proposal is
"a novel way out of the problems of insecurity, and one that meets the demands of the citizenry."
Bribiesca Sahagún insisted that because this is a real alternative, he is in favor of legalization.

Then he spoke about the forum that would soon convene a group of deputies to examine the foundations of the drug issue, not just marijuana, but also of all soft drugs for recreational and medical use.
"If these ideas of legalization are being considered, it is because we want to end the violence in this country," he said.
