Obama in Mexico Was "A Cheerleader" Telling "Fictions"

Aristegui Noticias:  Political analysts, Denise Dresser and Lorenzo Meyer, on the MVS News program First Edition [hosted by Carmen Aristegui], spoke of the visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to Mexico last week. Each concluded that the politician came to cheer for the Mexican government with a speech that was far from the truth, referring to his speech at the Museum of Anthropology.

Dresser called him "the cheerleader", who came to give a message of hope regarding a country "that moves, with great opportunities", plus he gave support to the president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto.

The political scientist said that Obama had to distance himself from the security policy of the presidency of Felipe Calderon, so he didn't even address the issue of security. She said that the U.S. president had to present Mexico as a reliable partner who is looking to the future because this coincides with his rhetoric to promote immigration reform.
"Obama had to send this message to various political groups that support him, and even to his opponents, who don't want immigration reform," said Dresser.
Analyst Lorenzo Meyer described the visit as a "package" in which Obama employed rhetoric which was a "necessary fiction" about what actually exists in Mexico. He questioned where the "emerging" Mexico is that Obama spoke about, while time is passing and things are not going well.
"Obama had to meet the circumstances of the moment ... he said the appropriate phrases, he followed the script," Meyer said.
