Milenio: Morelia, Michoacán • Tuesday morning, alleged students of the Rural Normal School [teachers college] of Cheran hijacked 10 passenger buses in the city of Zamora, the Secretariat of Public Security of Michoacan announced.

The youth arrived at an early hour in the city [in northwestern Michoacán] and immediately proceeded to seize the vehicles belonging to various companies, but there were no [violent] incidents.

Prior to Tuesday morning, the normal school students had in their custody 52 vehicles, including passenger buses, delivery trucks and two tractor trailers. Now the total is 62.

In addition, for nine days the students have heled five state policemen hostage. Their families have implored mercy for the agents, who, although they have not been physically harmed, show physical exhaustion from being isolated.
MV Note: The students are demanding that the state provide 1,300 guaranteed teaching jobs to graduates of the eight normal schools in the state. The normal schools were founded after the Mexican Revolution to provide primary and middle school education to rural, often indigenous, communities by training youth from those communities as teachers. Teaching jobs were guaranteed upon graduation.
