Mexico: Guerrero Dissident Teachers Return to Classrooms

CNN Mexico: Laura Reyes

Acapulco, Guerrero - After two months and 11 days of work stoppage, teachers of the State Coordinating Committee of Education Workers of Guerrero (CETEG) returned to teach 26,000 students in elementary and middle schools, while keeping their encampment south of the capital city, Chilpancingo, a CETEG spokesperson confirmed to CNNMéxico.

Guerrero Gov. Angel Aguirre Rivero, also wrote on his Twitter account that on Tuesday 100% of schools have reopened in Guerrero, a state located in southern Mexico. The statement was supported by the head of the Secretariat of Education in the state, Silvia Romero Suarez, who told CNNMéxico that "all conditions" and "negotiations" were in place for the return to classes.
"We see a reduced number of teachers still mobilized and this makes us think that most all of them are back in their regions, particularly in the high mountain region, and tomorrow (May 7) all schools will reopen. Tomorrow we will confirm this notice which we make in all seriousness, with all responsibility, because there is important progress and the teachers are so disposed," said the official.
Romero Suarez said there is dialogue between the state government and some of the leaders of the CETEG, ensuring their return to school.

... The state government also announced the development of a plan to recover missed classes by holding them on weekends, in order to avoid losing the school year because of the CETEG work stoppage that began on February 25.

The leadership of the CETEG announced that it had changed its press spokesperson. The new manager, Meinardo Lopez Pachuca, confirmed that this Tuesday most teachers will resume classes in the state.

However, members of the dissident teachers, who asked not to be named, told CNNMéxico that, in the state assembly on Sunday night, they discussed and approved leaving a sign in camp that said "the movement is still alive".
"It was agreed (at the meeting) that the issue will now be handled only at the national level with actions determined by the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE), but the camp is going to remain. It was a rocky and divided assembly", said one of the leaders of the CETEG. ...
