Mexico Opposition Parties Demand Impeachment of Social Development Secretary, Governor of Veracruz

Aristagui Noticias: Federal Deputies of the PAN, PRD and PT parties filed a complaint for the impeachment of the governor of Veracruz, Javier Duarte de Ochoa, and the head of the Secretariat of Social Development (SEDESOL), Rosario Robles Berlanga.

The Secretary General of the Chamber of Deputies, Mauricio Farah, received the request which was signed by 249 legislators.

At a press conference, the legislators presented that they have documented their charges and have also filed a criminal complaint for the alleged use of resources and actions to coerce the vote for PRI candidates in the state of Veracruz.

On July 7 elections will be held in 14 states of the country, including Veracruz, and they say that they want to ensure that no electoral fraud is committed, which would be detrimental to democratic progress.

In the press conference were the coordinators of the National Action Party (PAN), Luis Alberto Villarreal, the Democratic Revolutioary Party (PRD) Silvano Aureoles, the Labor Party (PT), Jesus Anaya and the Citizens Movement, Ricardo Mejia.

Villarreal explained that so far 249 lawmakers have signed the demand, but he hopes to increase that number to 366, which would, he said, be the two-thirds of deputies needed for the demand to proceed.

He said that the procedure for impeachment is long, as it is first sent to the committees of Governance and Justice, both chaired by members of the PRI, then a joint subcommittee is created from both chambers to exam it and make a recommendation to the Congress. Villarreal added that this process of impeachment should be completed before July.

The deputy coordinator of the Citizens Movement, Ricardo Mejia Berdeja, clarified that they did not sign the demand but supported it, and at the same time they demanded the removal of the official federal and the state governor. Spanish original
