Mexico: New General Victims Law Will Change Reality for Victims

Milenio: Édgar Itche

The president of the National Commission of Human Rights, Raúl Plascencia Villanueva, said that he expects approval of the reform to the General Law of Victims to change reality for people who are victims of crime. This, in order not to be victims of indulgence and neglect by authorities, public security principally; thus, it will be important that the Law become operational.

The ombudsman was questioned concerning the recent approval of the General Law of Victims by which the State, through the three levels of government, should guarantee and protect the rights of those affected.
"The important thing is for the Law to become operational and that we might soon have a reality for anyone who is the victim of a crime, rather than being a victim of indulgence or neglect by the authorities, particularly those who are in the field of public safety."
Plascencia Villanueva said that Mexico must find a solution to the problems it faces without the need to receive foreign judgments, after being questioned about the presence of Christof Heyns, United Nations rapporteur, who will visit the country from April 22 to the May 2, in order to go over the challenges and opportunities for better protection of the right to life.
"It is important that Mexico remain open to any kind of scrutiny. Above all, what I have said on more than one occasion, is that we might ourselves produce and find solutions to the problems we're facing without the need for foreign judgments."
