Milenio: Notimex

Morelia • Teachers of the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE) in Michoacan went on indefinite work stoppage on Monday and announced other actions in protest against the education reform.

Speaking to the press, the teachers' union leader Juan Jose Ortega, said that participation in the indefinite work stoppage stoppage is beginning with 75 percent of the elementary and middle schools, but felt that in the coming days it will reach 85 percent. Thus, he estimated that on Monday at least 800 thousand students in preschool, primary and middle school are without classes.

The announcement of the indefinite work stoppage came after teachers held a march and demonstrations at various shopping malls in the capital of Michoacan.

Ortega also mentioned that they anticipate the seizure of the Secretariat of Education and expressway tollbooths, as well as blockades of commercial malls, with support from civic groups and normal school [teacher college] students.  He said the only area of the Secretariat of Education that will not be siezed is the computer section, in order to prevent problems with the issuing of their biweekly paychecks. Spanish original
