Chipancingo, Guerrero • The head of the Secretariat of Education of Guerrero [SEG], Silvia Romero Suárez, announced that on Monday, April 22, they will begin the process to replace the teachers involved in the dissident teachers work stoppage.

Romero Suárez said that given the risk that thousands of children will lose the school year, they have considered the possibility of hiring outside teachers who will have the task of tending to the schools that have been closed by the movement led by the State Coordinating Committee of Education Workers in Guerrero.

Romero Suárez acknowledged that, so far, there are no precise figures on the number of schools involved in the work stoppage, but estimated that between 1,200 and 1,500 schools are without classes.

She explained that, on Monday, the Internal Controller and the Legal Department of the Secretariat will coordinate to initiate procedures to contract external teachers and resume classes.

She anticipated that next week they will review all schools in order to determine which parent organizations are determined to resume classes.

She said that the SEG is very concerned about resuming academic activities, so as not to jeopardize the school year, since as of April 25 there will have been two months of work stoppage.

On tour in the city of Iguala, Romero Suárez stated that the situation in each school needs to be analyzed in detail to see how many teacher supervisors each has and, if necessary, return them to the classroom to support the resumption of classes.

She said that such an action is a result of the fear among parents over the real risk of losing the school year, which has already been interrupted for almost eight weeks. Spanish original
