Mexico Government Will Strictly Enforce the Law, But Put Dialogue Over Action - Peña Nieto

Milenio: Miriam Castillo, Correspondent

Tokyo • President Enrique Peña said that in strict guarantee for the respect of rights located in the Constitution, the government will respect all demonstrations that are held against any action of his administration.

He said that all protests must be within the law and, in this sense, he warned that if self defense groups take actions that violate the law they will be fought by the government.

The President was asked about the joining of the self-defense groups of Guerrero with the demonstrations of the dissident teachers.
"We are a democratic government that enforces the law and exercises the protection of the law. We are a country that respects the free expression of ideas and, beyond what any of these groups call themselves, we will be in absolute respect for this freedom of expression enshrined in our Constitution.
"However, this is very clear. Beyond the self-designations that these groups may have, any possible practices that they might want to make to take justice into their own hands, these are an activity that is outside the law and that the government will fight," said the President at a press conference at the end of his week-long tour through Asia.
Peña felt that his government will act "with the law in its hands", in order to apply the strictly, and he reiterated the readiness to put dialogue over any other action.

Reporter: Do you see a risk of social unrest?
"I don't see it, it seems to me that this is an aspiration .... I think that in Mexico an energetic climate prevails because we are able to put ourselves on a path of support and understanding."
