CNN Mexico: Elementary and middle school teachers returned to the streets of Mexico City today to protest the education reform enacted by the government of Mexico, demanding changes so that it doesn't affect their labor rights.
The teachers, belonging to the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (CNTE), a dissident part of the National Union of Education Workers [SNTE], marched from the Monument of the Revolution to the Palace of Justice, where they intend to deliver thousands of petitions for amparo [injunctions] against the new educational provisions [MV Note: A federal judge recently granted provisional injunctions to 100,000 such teacher petitioners.]
Ruben Núñez, general secretary of the CNTE Section 22, which includes most of the teachers of Oaxaca, reported that the mobilization is part of a national agreement to add 7,000 new petitions to the over 40,000 already submitted to the courts.
"Here, today, we focus our attention on the agreements of the National Assembly of the CNTE, but also on the framework for the political route that has been proposed," Núñez said at the start of the event which attracted about 200 demonstrators. The petitions for injunctions have the objective of soliciting the protection of the courts against the new guidelines regarding teacher evaluation, recruitment, permanence of contracts and the allocation of teaching jobs for student teachers.
This coming Saturday, the CNTE will hold state assemblies where each state section will vote on a possible national strike. The final decision will be made in the National Assembly, to be held next week, in accordance with the local ballots, said Núñez. ... Spanish original
