Indigenous Peoples Demand Recognition of Their Rights and to be Included in Mexico's National Development Plan

La Jornada: Fernando Camacho Servín

In order that their demands and requirements are incorporated into the National Development Plan (NDP) 2013-2018, organizations belonging to the National Indigenous Movement (MIN) will hold forums tomorrow and Saturday in the states of Mexico and Michoacán, which stressed the need for recognition of the rights of the indigenous peoples.

At a press conference, María Antonieta Hernández, from the MIN, read a statement in which it is stated that the indigenous of the country have once again been struck by the way that the National Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI) has carried out consultations to integrate the NDP.

The Mazahua activist emphasized that this process has been limited to holding three forums in the country, of which many communities have not been informed, in addition to one consultation organized by the federal government through the Internet, with a closed format and limited to a few questions.

Therefore, the organization will hold a regional forum for the center of the country, to be held tomorrow from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at a hotel in the city of Toluca, with three workshops that will cover topics such as popular representation, constitutional reforms and the functioning of agencies  like the CDI.
